Iraq’s Bold Plan: Achieving 3M Tons of Local Zero Flour Production

On Monday, the Ministry of Commerce unveiled an ambitious initiative aimed at boosting local flour production from zero to an impressive 3 million tons, with the objective of reducing reliance on imports.

Haydar Nuri Al-Karawi, the General Manager of the Grain Trade Company within the Ministry of Trade, highlighted that “there are over 300 mills engaged in flour production associated with the ration card system, alongside seven mills specializing in zero flour production.”

He emphasized that plans are in place to expand the number of zero flour mills to approximately 30 in the near term, a move that will significantly contribute to Iraq’s goal of achieving self-sufficiency in this critical sector.

Furthermore, Al-Karawi noted, “Iraq aims to locally produce 3 million tons of zero flour within the next one to two years, effectively eliminating the need for imports from countries such as Türkiye, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait.”
