Iraqi Government Approves Budget for Upcoming Parliamentary Elections

The Iraqi government has approved an additional allocation of 294.370 trillion dinars to facilitate the upcoming parliamentary elections. The Independent High Electoral Commission has expressed support for this decision.

This funding will be integrated into the federal budget framework for the fiscal year 2025, increasing the total amount allocated for the elections to 398.600 trillion dinars.

The decision was officially endorsed during the fourth regular meeting of the Council of Ministers on January 28, 2025, chaired by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Sudani and other senior officials.

Imad Jamil, head of the media team for the Independent High Electoral Commission, commented on the via social media, stating, "We welcome the decision made by the Council of Ministers of Iraq." He added, "This funding forms a crucial part of the execution plan for the elections."

The parliamentary elections are scheduled to take place in the second month of the year.

Moreover, the Iraqi High Judicial Council has extended the operational period for the Commission’s Board of Commissioners for another two years.

In addition to approving the budget, the Council of Ministers made several other significant resolutions, including:

  • Streamlining the draft law regarding the Endowment Diwan and submitting it to Parliament for further consideration.

  • Preparing a regulatory framework that links the duties of the insurance authority with the Central Bank of Iraq.

  • Approving the establishment of an electronic commerce framework within Iraq.

  • Authorizing a collaboration between the Ministry of Transport and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to prepare a roadmap for managing the operation and expansion of airports in Basra, Mosul, Diwaniyah, and Najaf with specialized partners.
