Decline in Electric Energy Production in Iraq
Baghdad – Electricity Minister Ziyad Ali Fadel addressed the recent downturn in electric energy production in Iraq, highlighting the essential role of gas supplies from Iran, especially as the summer approaches.
Fadel revealed that the lack of gas supplies to the central region over the past two months, specifically in December and January, has resulted in a significant loss of approximately 8,000 megawatts of electric energy. Furthermore, he indicated that ongoing maintenance work on ministry units is expected to contribute an additional loss of 5,000 megawatts. In total, this accumulation of factors is projected to amount to a total loss of 13,000 megawatts in electric output.
During discussions with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Sudani, Fadel emphasized the necessity of adhering to existing contracts between Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity and the Iranian Gas Company. This adherence is crucial to ensuring a stable flow of gas supplies, as 70 percent of Iraq’s electricity production is dependent on fuel sources.
Fadel also stated that the Ministry is still awaiting the resumption of gas flows from Iran. However, he noted a positive commitment from the Iranian side to enhance gas supply quantities as summer 2025 approaches.
In summary, the Iraqi electricity sector is grappling with substantial production losses primarily due to reduced gas supplies, compounded by maintenance activities. Continued dialogue and contractual compliance with Iran are pivotal in addressing these challenges as the demand for electricity is projected to rise during the upcoming summer months.
