Iraqi Population Census Results Pave the Way for Economic Resource Allocation
On Monday, Iraqi Minister of Planning, Muhammad Ali Tamim, underscored the significance of the newly released population indicators, emphasizing their vital role in diagnosing various sectors and ensuring equitable resource distribution among governorates.
During the closing conference announcing the outcomes of the general census conducted by the ministry, Tamim characterized the census as a notable milestone in Iraqi history. He remarked that this accomplishment marks the successful completion of one of the country’s most challenging projects, achieved through steadfast governmental commitment.
"For the first time in four decades, Iraq has conducted a comprehensive population census. The results will allow the government to allocate resources fairly across provinces," Tamim stated.
He also highlighted that the developmental landscape in Iraq is poised for transformation following the census. The data reveals crucial indicators across various domains, such as infrastructure, economic activities, educational attainment, and service provisions—elements vital for diagnosing and enhancing sectoral developments.
Tamim expressed appreciation for the exemplary cooperation noted among the ministries of planning, legislative branches, and judicial authorities, as well as support from the United Nations Population Fund and other international agencies. He specifically recognized the collaborative efforts with the Census Authority in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq as a critical factor contributing to the census’s success.
The Ministry of Planning officially announced the key findings of the general population census, revealing that Iraq’s population stands at 46 million and 118 thousand, a significant increase from the preliminary figure of 45 million and 407 thousand reported last November. Furthermore, detailed data concerning diverse categories—encompassing economic status, marital status, educational levels, and housing conditions—were presented, highlighting comprehensive statistics relevant to both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
This census not only serves as a pivotal tool for structural understanding and resource allocation but also sets a foundation for future economic policy formulation and development initiatives across Iraq.
