Economic Update – Baghdad
The Ministry of Planning announced on Monday a notable reduction in Iraq’s unemployment rate, shrinking from 16.5% to 14%. This decline is attributed to the implementation of various projects that have effectively generated job opportunities and contributed to decreasing unemployment levels.
The recent trends indicate that unemployment rates have consistently declined over the past two years. Specifically, the unemployment rate stood at 16.5% in 2021 and the early part of 2022. However, preliminary results from the economic and social survey reveal that this figure has now decreased to 14%, marking a reduction of 2.5 percentage points from 2022 to 2025.
According to Al-Hindawi, the conclusion of economic and social survey operations across all provinces has led to the emergence of detailed indicators regarding unemployment and poverty, encompassing all age demographics.
Al-Hindawi further elaborated that the drop in unemployment from 16.5% to 14% is a result of targeted policies and measures initiated by the government in alignment with the development plan outlined by the Ministry of Planning, reflecting the priorities of the governmental program. These policies have successfully created a range of employment opportunities, particularly for university graduates and those with higher degrees.
Moreover, there has been a focused effort to address the challenges posed by various projects that have generated job opportunities, including new initiatives launched in previous years. Projects aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in Baghdad and other provinces have notably contributed to job creation, facilitating a significant reduction in unemployment. Al-Hindawi noted that the implementation of these projects is ongoing, with the private sector increasingly catalyzing additional job opportunities.
