Iraq Boosts Electric Capacity in Najaf with New Transformer

The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity has announced the launch of a significant expansion project at Najaf Station (400), which includes the addition of a fifth transformer with a capacity of 250 MVA. This enhancement raises the station’s total capacity to 1,250 MVA.

In a statement released by the Minister of Electricity, Ziad Ali Fadel, the initiative is described as a pivotal step towards improving the electrical energy infrastructure in the Holy Cities. The recent expansion at Najaf Station aims to bolster the overall power supply in the region.

Minister Fadel emphasized Najaf’s critical position within the government’s strategic planning for the Ministry of Electricity. He noted that since last year, the focus has been on key projects, including the establishment of the complex cycle at the Najaf invading station, which has a capacity of 132 megawatts, and the expansion of the Haidariya power station through the addition of a vehicle cycle with a 363 megawatt capacity. Additionally, a new thermal station is being established in Najaf, set to deliver 1,400 megawatts, as part of a broader initiative to develop investment thermal stations with a total capacity of 15 megawatts.

Fadel reiterated that the Ministry has devised a comprehensive plan to rectify issues in the production, transportation, and distribution sectors, aiming to adequately prepare for the upcoming summer season. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to enhancing the infrastructure in the Holy Cities to meet the demands created by significant visitor inflows.

The opening ceremony for the new expansion project was attended by Najaf Governor Youssef Kunawi, along with several members of the Najaf Provincial Council.
