Iraq and Syria Set to Resume Trade: Key Developments Ahead

Iraq to Reestablish Trade Relations with Syria

Iraq is on the verge of resuming trade exchanges with Syria, as the latter has fulfilled the conditions set by Iraqi authorities to establish a comprehensive border outlet in Qa’im. This includes provisions for guards, market access, and the requisite passport controls.

The Iraqi authorities have completed their preparations for the resumption of trade and have formally requested that Syria implements an integrated checkpoint at the border. This measure is aimed at preventing the influx of smuggled goods into Iraq.

A representative from the Iraqi business community indicated that the Syrian side has adequately met the stipulations for the border port, which encompasses the installation of security personnel, as well as the establishment of markets and passport facilities. The implementation of a cooperative agreement, awaiting the approval of Iraqi security leaders, will outline operational protocols, export materials, and necessary documentation, including certificates of origin and inspection statements. The port is expected to be operational within the week.

Key Trade Commodities

As for the primary commodities involved in this trade exchange, the head of the Syrian-Iraqi Business Council disclosed that Iraq plans to export dates and various food products, while importing goods such as sweets, pastries, fruits, vegetables, cosmetics, perfumes, medicines, and medical supplies.

On January 25, 2025, the Syrian Ministry of Economy unveiled its strategic plan aimed at strengthening the domestic economy, which prioritizes the enhancement of exports, the opening of new markets for Syrian products, and the expansion of trade relations with neighboring countries, including Iraq. Additionally, efforts are underway to improve logistical infrastructure to streamline export activities.

On January 6, 2025, the Syrian Minister of Economy in the interim government outlined ongoing government initiatives to expand economic ties with Iraq.

Abdel Hanan emphasized that these initiatives encompass industrial integration in product offerings, promotion of trade, and the provision of various incentives to facilitate product exchanges between the two nations. Furthermore, the plans involve encouraging investment projects and simplifying customs procedures to enhance the flow of goods and services across borders.
