Advancements in Iraq’s Gas Sector: A Strategic Focus on Sustainability
The Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Minister of Oil, Hayyan Abdel-Ghani Al-Sawad, emphasized the ongoing execution of significant strategic initiatives aimed at optimizing the utilization of gas across various sectors, including the enhancement of electrical stations and the cessation of gas flaring to promote environmental sustainability.
In a recent statement, Al-Sawad detailed that a contract has been finalized with Total Gas Investment Company, encompassing five fields, with project work advancing steadily according to established timelines.
The Minister noted that the escalating demand for gas has compelled the government to undertake two pivotal projects. The first involves the construction of a fixed platform at FAO to facilitate gas imports, with designated land at Iraqi ports allotted for this purpose. Additionally, a floating platform will be erected at Khor Al-Zubair port, aimed at streamlining gas imports from neighboring countries and Qatar, complete with an infrastructure plan to connect gas supply to primary stations.
On January 10, 2025, the Minister of Oil inaugurated the gas production initiative in the Artawi field, which is projected to yield 50 million cubic feet of gas daily in partnership with French company Total. This project is anticipated to be completed next year, significantly contributing to the energy supply for power generation facilities.
The Iraqi government remains committed to developing the gas sector to meet national energy demands while simultaneously enhancing environmental conditions across the country.
