Imminent Electricity Crisis in Iraq: US Sanctions Looming

Iraqi Electricity Crisis: Warning from Aras Habib

Aras Habib, the leader of the Iraqi National Congress, has issued a significant warning regarding an impending electricity crisis in Baghdad. He anticipates that electricity supply could face a severe reduction, dropping to as low as 5-9 hours per day. This situation is exacerbated by a decision to deprive the Smayah station of gas supplies, particularly following the discovery of a gas carrier linked to Iranian Turkmenistan, which is currently under sanctions.

Financial Sanctions on the Horizon

Habib highlighted that Iraq is at risk of facing financial sanctions, as the U.S. has communicated to Baghdad the likelihood of sanctions concerning the electricity sector and dollar transactions in the upcoming months.

He elaborated on the implications of such actions, noting that while Iraqi assets in the United States are safeguarded by American administrations, the potential cancellation of protections, particularly under a future administration led by Donald Trump, could result in the loss of these assets.

Concerns Over Diplomatic Relations

Moreover, Habib criticized the weak diplomatic ties between Iraq and the United States, as well as other major global players, suggesting that Iraq lacks the effective leverage necessary to navigate this precarious situation.

In addition, he expressed concerns over the integrity of electoral data, citing fears of potential manipulation that have led to the preservation of population data outside Iraq.
