Economy Update – Baghdad
Badr al-Fahal, the governor of Salah al-Din, reported on Tuesday the commencement of a significant initiative aimed at bolstering grain storage capabilities in the region. The foundation stone has been laid for the construction of 25 storage facilities, collectively designed to accommodate 175,000 tons of grain, distributed across several districts.
In a statement, Al-Fahal outlined that these storage units will be strategically located: 10 in the Dujail district, 10 in the Al-Salam district, and 5 in Baiji. This expansion is intended to support local farmers in preparation for the upcoming agricultural season.
Al-Fahal emphasized Salah al-Din’s commitment to leading wheat and barley production within Iraq. He noted that the governorate achieved notable success last year and is poised to secure the top production rank this year, owing to favorable rainfall and ongoing irrigation initiatives.
Dahham Ali Ahmed, director of the grain trade branch in Salah al-Din, supported these claims, stating that the establishment of 25 banks is a direct response to the storage requirements set forth by the Ministry of Commerce. Salah al-Din ranks among the leading wheat-producing governorates, having received approximately 890,000 tons last year. Due to storage deficiencies, there has been a need for rapid transfers to processing mills, underscoring the urgency for these new facilities to enhance storage capacity.
Ahmed detailed the distribution of the new storage units across the Dujail, Al-Salam, and Baiji areas, which are expected to see a considerable rise in grain production. Each facility will have a minimum storage capacity of 7,000 tons, culminating in a total project capacity of around 175,000 tons.
