Economic Developments – Baghdad

On Wednesday, German Ambassador to Iraq, Christian Hohman, emphasized the strong collaborative efforts between Germany and Iraq across various sectors in a report submitted to her government. This briefing highlighted notable Iraqi achievements, reflecting a commitment to mutual interests.

During a dialogue session at the Iraq Energy Conference, Hohman acknowledged that one of the significant challenges for investors in Iraq is the electricity supply. She pointed out the stark differences between the business environments in Iraq and Germany, stating, “The Iraqi environment is different from our country.”

The ambassador elaborated that the embassy has been active in documenting the advancements occurring within Iraq, noting, “We have compiled a report on the achievements in Iraq.” She highlighted that investment is a two-way street, with Iraqi entrepreneurs also making investments in Germany. “There are Iraqi businessmen who invest in Germany, not just the other way around,” she explained.

Hohman further mentioned the presence of numerous German companies operating in Iraq, particularly in the electrical sector. She brought attention to a glass production facility in Najaf province and a laboratory for pharmaceuticals, underscoring the depth of cooperation with German firms.

Expressing optimism about Iraq’s future, Hohman stated, “We want Iraq to succeed at the national and global levels. Iraq is a young country with ample energy and job opportunities that need to be harnessed.” She noted that the focus on history is crucial for building a sustainable future in Iraq.

The ambassador emphasized the role of embassies in providing guidance and attracting investments, clarifying, “While we are here to support, the actual work and development must come from within the country.”
