French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that France will allocate 50 million euros to bolster stability initiatives in Syria. This funding will also facilitate transit arrangements for Syrian refugees to return temporarily to their home country before allowing for their return to France.
Speaking at an international conference focused on Syria in Paris on February 13, Macron emphasized the pivotal role of Syrian transitional authorities in providing hope for its citizens. He indicated plans to welcome Syrian President Ahmed Al-Shara to Paris in the near future.
Macron remarked on the importance of integrating the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) into a new Syrian army, highlighting the need to support these forces, which are primarily led by Kurds. He stated, “We must not abandon the Syrian Democratic Forces,” reinforcing France’s commitment to this cause.
In terms of counter-terrorism efforts, Macron reaffirmed France’s dedication to combating terrorist organizations in Syria, particularly against the backdrop of the ongoing fight against ISIS. He stressed that Iranian groups should not re-enter Syria, underscoring the need for a continued, united front against such threats.
“The transitional process in Syria must align with our commitment to partner in the fight against ISIS,” President Macron asserted, underlining the interconnected nature of political and security strategies in the region.
