Foot-and-Mouth Epidemic Threatens Iraq’s Livestock: Updates

Economic Update – Baghdad

The Agriculture and Parliamentary Water Committee has reiterated that the risk posed by the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Iraq remains significant, nearly one month after the initial case was reported.

Committee member MP Thaer al-Jubouri highlighted that the disease has affected approximately 20 regions, particularly Al-Fadliya in Baghdad, resulting in substantial livestock and buffalo fatalities. This has led to considerable financial losses for livestock producers. He emphasized that the danger persists, necessitating ongoing vigilance and adherence to preventive measures, particularly concerning the movement of livestock between governorates, especially in regions experiencing outbreaks.

MP al-Jubouri noted that livestock imports have been a primary contributor to the resurgence of foot-and-mouth disease, with some imported animals confirmed to be infected. This situation calls for a re-evaluation of import protocols to avoid the future spread of such lethal diseases.

The Parliamentary and Parliamentary Water Committee is actively monitoring the situation in collaboration with relevant authorities to contain the outbreak, especially in light of several new infection hotspots identified over the past weeks.
