FCC Project in Basra Nears Completion: A Game Changer for Iraq

Completion of FCC Project in Basra Nearing 97%

The General Manager of the Southern Refineries Company in Basra, Hossam Hussein Wali, announced today, March 6, 2025, that the completion rate of the FCC (Fluid Catalytic Cracking) project has reached an impressive 97%. This signals that the project is on the verge of operational readiness.

In a recent statement, Wali indicated that the mechanical work for the FCC project is scheduled to conclude by the end of this month, with ongoing efforts to adequately cover internal roadways to facilitate the transport of significant equipment and prepare for full-scale operations set to commence in June.

Wali emphasized the historical significance of this project for modern Iraq, highlighting its anticipated role in significantly reducing imports of high-octane gasoline while also delivering other essential petroleum derivatives.

Furthermore, Wali noted that the project received a visit from the Minister of Oil, Hayyan Abdul-Ghani Al-Sawad, alongside the Prime Minister. This high-level oversight underscores the government’s commitment and support toward the timely completion of the FCC initiative. Wali reiterated that this rigorous endeavor is being pushed forward to ensure it becomes operational within the middle of this year.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Oil, Hayyan Abdul-Ghani Al-Sawad, engaged with the project last Friday, reviewing the progress made and reiterating the importance of completing the construction operations efficiently.

This development represents a pivotal moment for Iraq’s energy sector, promising increased self-sufficiency and a reduction in import reliance.
