Egyptian Firms Compete to Build Baghdad’s New Administrative Capital: Ministry Unveils Ambitious Plans

Economy News – Baghdad

The Ministry of Construction, Housing, and Public Municipalities has announced that four Egyptian companies have submitted proposals to develop a new administrative capital in the Nahrawan area of Baghdad.

Eng. Hamed Abdel Hamad, the head of the new cities authority within the ministry, stated that these four prominent Egyptian firms possess significant experience in the development of new cities and administrative capitals. Many of these companies are currently engaged in various urban projects in Baghdad and across other governorates, as well as undertaking similar initiatives in Egypt.

Hamad noted that the ministry is actively conducting discussions with representatives of these companies to select the most suitable candidates for the project. He emphasized that the evaluation is ongoing and that a final agreement has yet to be reached. The process requires careful consideration of site allocations for each ministry to facilitate an effective transition of their operations in the forthcoming phase.

The proposed project includes the allocation of 50 dunams for each ministry, intended for the construction of its respective buildings within the capital, as well as the establishment of a highway and modern transportation systems for the city.

Furthermore, Hamad highlighted that the authority is in continuous collaboration with relevant entities to foster new commercial, industrial, and service ventures in the new capital. This initiative aims to achieve self-sufficiency, ensuring that those employed in these sectors are also residents of the area, which will alleviate congestion in the city center and promote housing development.

The initiative to construct new cities outside urban centers is a fundamental aspect of the government’s program. Consequently, the ministry is prioritizing this project and has commenced the establishment of five cities, with plans to announce an additional six for tendering to companies shortly. The long-term objective is to construct a total of 52 cities throughout the country, varying in size.
