Dr. Muhammad Al-Hasan Takes the Helm of UNAMI: A New Era of Optimism for Kuwaiti-Iraqi Relations

Abdullah Khaled Al-Ghanem

Recently, the appointment of His Excellency Dr. Muhammad Al-Hasan as the head of the UN mission in Iraq has garnered significant optimism. His leadership marks a pivotal moment, as he is the first Arab to assume this important international role since the Security Council’s resolution No. 1500 was issued in August 2003, establishing the mission focused on providing support and assistance in Iraq.

Among the various responsibilities of the UN mission is mediation in Iraq’s regional issues. This involves facilitating dialogue between Iraq and neighboring countries to address critical political, security, and humanitarian concerns.

Dr. Al-Hasan’s good efforts became apparent during his recent visit to Kuwait, where he engaged with Kuwaiti leadership, demonstrating a proactive approach that aims to mediate a successful relationship between Kuwait and Iraq.

A notable outcome of this diplomatic initiative was the appointment of His Excellency Ambassador Muhammad Abu Al-Hassan as the special envoy of His Highness Sheikh Mishaal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, to meet with Iraqi Prime Minister Mr. Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani.

During this pivotal meeting on Tuesday, there was a palpable sense of optimism regarding the possibility of building a robust framework for bilateral dialogue between the two nations. This discussion aims to address outstanding files and lay down the necessary foundations for a comprehensive strategic partnership that fosters mutual benefits in economic, security, logistical, and political arenas.

It is evident that the immediate interests of both countries necessitate moving beyond past grievances and overcoming existing challenges. The goal is to achieve a comprehensive geo-economic partnership, positioning both Kuwait and Iraq among the key global geo-economic hubs. This could enhance their capacities significantly and bolster competitiveness within the landscape of international trade.

In reflecting on this promising direction, Dr. Muhammad Al-Hasan articulated a forward-looking vision during his visit, stating:

(The bonds that unite the two brotherly peoples of the Republic of Iraq and the State of Kuwait will allow us to close the chapter on the past and open new pages of cooperation and mutual trust).

In conclusion:
– It is essential to build on the foundation laid by Dr. Al-Hasan; we must take decisive steps forward based on this new paradigm.
