Baghdad’s Retail Project: A Game Changer for Traffic Relief

Economy Update – Baghdad

The Ministry of Transport is nearing the completion of the initial phase of its retail project at the entrances to the capital, aimed at reducing truck traffic and alleviating congestion.

Maitham Al-Safi, the director of the media office at the Ministry, highlighted that the retail project is integral to the government’s strategic initiatives. This initiative will facilitate the arrival of trucks carrying goods from the provinces of Kirkuk, Salah al-Din, Wasit, Babylon, and Anbar to the city’s outskirts.

He further noted that progress is advancing rapidly, with the aim of establishing these receiving areas to effectively manage the inflow of trucks into Baghdad, thereby optimizing operations within those zones.

Al-Safi elaborated that the Al-Youssoufia Entrance Square, which spans 400 dunums and connects Anbar, Babylon, and Baghdad, has reached advanced completion rates and is on the verge of inauguration. This site will serve as an architectural landmark at the city’s entry points, featuring completed sidewalks, adequate lighting, paved internal roads, sanitary facilities for drivers, and bridge scales, marking the first phase of this significant project.

Regarding the Taji Square (Baghdad – Salah al-Din entrance), Al-Safi confirmed that the completion rate has surpassed 40% for its first phase, following an expansion of an additional 90 dunums to its total area.

These facilities are designed as part of an international system that restricts the movement of large trucks within urban areas. This approach not only aims to safeguard roads and bridges but also contributes to mitigating traffic congestion, lowering environmental pollution, enhancing workforce utilization, and generating revenue for the state.

The new squares at Hawalli Baghdad will feature modern refrigerated storage facilities, a rest area, a fuel mobilization station, cafeterias, and covered areas for passenger vehicles.
