Baghdad’s Health Ministry Signals Boost in Local Pharmaceutical Production Amid International Partnerships

Economy Update – Baghdad

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Health reported that recent decisions by the Council of Ministers have significantly boosted local pharmaceutical production and the development of domestic manufacturing facilities. The ministry noted that several international firms are actively seeking partnerships with Iraq’s pharmaceutical sector.

The government’s approach prioritizes the support and promotion of national industries, particularly pharmaceuticals. This involves facilitating, simplifying, and accelerating processes critical to establishing new industries and enhancing existing ones.

As a result, the number of locally produced medicinal products has markedly increased, alongside advancements in existing manufacturing plants and an expansion of production lines.

The Health Minister highlighted that a recent agreement with the French multinational Sanofi reflects the company’s commitment to potentially establish manufacturing operations within Iraq. This initiative is poised to bolster the national economy, create job opportunities for Iraqi labor, and expedite the domestic production of therapeutic materials, thereby enhancing overall healthcare services. This aligns with the government’s objectives to advance the health sector and fortify the pharmaceutical industry.

The Ministry has received interest from several high-caliber international firms across European, Asian, and American industries, expressing their desire to collaborate with both government and private sector entities in Iraq.

Health Minister Saleh Al-Hasnawi announced the partnership with Sanofi, aimed at enhancing the healthcare sector’s capabilities in Iraq.

Rami Nassar, General Manager of Sanofi’s operations in the Near East, stated that the company has committed to collaborating with the Ministry of Health to develop the skills of its teams. A two-year agreement was signed, covering various key areas.

This agreement encompasses multiple focal points: training for nursing staff in conjunction with accredited institutions within and outside Iraq, a continuous medical education program for physicians and technical personnel, and support for the registration and approval of biological medications. A critical component of this collaboration also addresses the fight against counterfeit and smuggled pharmaceuticals in the Iraqi market, highlighting the significant impact on patient health.

Numerous international pharmaceutical companies are expressing an interest in supporting Iraq’s health sector, largely due to the supportive measures and benefits provided by the Iraqi Ministry of Health, aimed at attracting foreign investment in the country.
