Baghdad’s Governor Unveils New Initiatives to Combat Pollution

The Governor of Baghdad, Abdul Muttalib Al-Alawi, announced on Monday the initiation of effective joint measures aimed at mitigating water and air pollution in the capital, in close coordination with relevant authorities.

According to a statement issued by the Government Media and Communication Department, Governor Al-Alawi presided over the third meeting of the Supreme Committee for Environmental Improvement and Development. This meeting included representatives from the ministries of environment, health, water resources, higher education, industry, and the Baghdad Municipality.

The deliberations focused on assessing the levels of water and air pollution, as well as strategies for afforestation, the preservation of green spaces, and medical waste disposal. The committee established necessary recommendations to address these environmental issues.

Al-Alawi emphasized the importance of convening a follow-up meeting within two weeks to specifically tackle the pollution problems affecting the Tigris and Diyala rivers. The goal is to formulate appropriate recommendations for the relevant authorities, reinforcing ongoing efforts to safeguard and enhance Baghdad’s environment.
