Economic Update
Electricity Minister Ziyad Ali Fadel has outlined the key challenges facing electric energy production, noting Iran’s commitment to increase gas supplies in anticipation of the upcoming summer months.
In a recent address, Fadel highlighted that disruptions in gas supply to the central region during December and January have resulted in a substantial reduction of approximately 8,000 megawatts in electrical output. Furthermore, ongoing maintenance work on several operational units is expected to exacerbate this situation, contributing an additional loss of 5,000 megawatts. Consequently, the total deficit may reach as high as 13,000 megawatts.
The minister mentioned that he engaged in discussions with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Sudani regarding the importance of honoring contracts with the Iranian Gas Company. This alignment is crucial for ensuring a steady flow of gas, given that 70 percent of the country’s electricity generation relies heavily on fuel sources. Fadel also stated that the ministry is awaiting the resumption of gas flow from Iran and noted that Iranian officials have assured a commitment to furnish increased gas supplies leading up to the summer of 2025.
