The Ministry of Construction, Housing, and Public Municipalities has unveiled a strategic initiative to safeguard roads from the impact of heavy truck traffic, in collaboration with the Kurdistan region.
Hussein Jassim Kazem, the Director General of the Roads and Bridges Department, emphasized the importance of this plan during a recent statement, noting that the weight stations will function based on a comprehensive three-way statement that establishes standard loading parameters.
Kazem clarified, “The objective of this collaborative framework with the Kurdistan region is to create a unified record across all governorates, including the Kurdistan region itself.” He further pointed out that “these standard load metrics are critical for comparing actual loads traversing public roads and ensuring they adhere to established guidelines.”
He also highlighted the significance of the region’s key transit points with neighboring Turkey, particularly the Kirkuk road leading to Baghdad. This necessitates effective oversight of load movements traveling from the north to the capital and vice versa, to preserve the integrity of the national road network, which has endured considerable stress due to inadequate load management.
