Baghdad Set to Launch First Phase of ‘Ali Al-Wardi’ Residential City Project, Promising 120,000 Housing Units

Economy Update – Baghdad

The Ministry of Construction, Housing, and Public Municipalities has announced the forthcoming commencement of the first phase of the Ali Al-Wardi residential city project in Baghdad, which is slated to encompass 120,000 housing units.

Eng. Hamid Abdel Hamad, head of the new cities authority at the ministry, stated that a prominent Egyptian firm specializing in the housing sector will begin work on the first phase of the Ali Al-Wardi residential city, located in Nahrawan, Baghdad. He noted that this initial phase will occupy approximately one-third of the total area of the city, which spans 24,000 dunams. The entire project, structured in three phases, is projected to take five years for completion.

Furthermore, Abdel Hamad indicated that essential preliminary work has been underway, including soil surveys, land modification, and the removal of debris and roads. The Public Authority for Radio Survey has also initiated its work to ensure the site is free from pollution, which began two months ago. The project aims to include the construction of a highway linking the city to the capital, as well as a tram line positioned along the central island of the city’s streets.

In a related development, the ministry has collaborated with Chinese and Egyptian companies to move forward with the Al-Nakheel residential city project in Basra. Following the completion of the preliminary and detailed designs by these companies, the project will cover an area of 54,000 dunams, 20,000 of which will be designated as a natural reserve. The sustainable residential city will consist of 120,000 housing units, while the remaining area will support industrial, commercial, and agricultural activities, ultimately fostering a comprehensive urban environment. Abdel Hamad revealed that a task force is being established to delineate responsibilities between the authorities and participating companies.

Additionally, Abdel Hamad highlighted plans for five more cities to initiate procedures shortly, including Al-Jawahiri in the Abu Ghraib area of Baghdad, Al-Ghazani in Nineveh Governorate, the city of Peace in Najaf Governorate, the banks of Karbala in the holy province of Karbala, and the suspended city of Gena in Babil Governorate. He anticipates that the completion of these five projects will yield approximately 2.2 million housing units, significantly alleviating the housing crisis currently faced in the country.
