Baghdad Secures 500 m³/s Water Revenue Deal with Turkey Amid Improved Euphrates Flow

The Ministry of Water Resources announced an agreement regarding the stability of transit water revenues from Turkey, confirming a flow rate of 500 cubic meters per second and indicating a notable improvement in water revenues from the Euphrates River.

Khaled North, the Director General of the General Authority for Irrigation and Reclamation Projects and the official spokesperson for the ministry, noted in an interview that the Iraqi-Syrian collaboration in water management has been ongoing for several years. He emphasized that a protocol is in place that governs the sharing of Euphrates River waters between Iraq and Syria.

Additionally, North mentioned an agreement with Turkey which supports the stability of transnational water revenues along the Iraqi-Syrian border, also at a rate of 500 cubic meters per second. He addressed challenges encountered at the Tishreen Dam, explaining that a specialized technical team from the Tabqa Dam was dispatched to conduct necessary safety procedures for the dam’s integrity.

Currently, the water revenue in the Euphrates River has improved significantly, exceeding 400 cubic meters per second. The ministry has been utilizing a modern dam for water storage and managing river flows to effectively supply the governorates of the Middle Euphrates region.
