Baghdad Ports Authority Unveils Key Infrastructure Decisions

Economy Update – Baghdad

On Thursday, the Border Ports Authority Council convened to announce several significant decisions affecting the development of airport and port infrastructure, as well as measures to support the economy.

The council, led by Major General Omar Adnan Al-Waeli, the head of the Border Ports Authority, conducted its second meeting of 2025 with full participation from representatives across various ministries, governorates, and relevant authorities. This meeting was held at the authority’s headquarters.

The council emphasized the importance of adhering to and following through on the implementation of its decisions within the purview of each involved entity.

Among the primary discussions were proposals from the General Company for Iraq Ports regarding the opening of the Al-Alasiya Pier and the Pavement of Governance. The need for these facilities was highlighted, particularly concerning their roles in cargo and passenger transport, as well as the transfer of clinker. The representative for Iraqi ports underscored the critical importance of these developments for the Basra Governorate and beyond.

The council deliberated on the proposal and voted to proceed with the opening, contingent upon the formation of a joint committee comprising various government departments. This committee will assess the readiness of these facilities before their official inauguration.

Furthermore, the council addressed the functions of the Airport Security Protection Directorate, ensuring there would be no overlap with other security agencies. A suggestion was made for an integrated meeting of all security services operating at the airport, led by the Border Ports Authority, to promote coordination and information sharing.

Additionally, the council unanimously agreed on the necessity of allocating buildings for all departments involved with future airport openings, including those at Mosul International, Nasiriyah International, and Karbala International airports, as well as the Grand Port. This allocation is based on the operational needs to enhance performance levels.

The council also voted on the importance of maintaining the banks located at border ports to ensure optimal service delivery.

In conclusion, the council voted to exempt employees from the Ministry of Health who work in health centers under international health regulations, as well as staff from the General Customs Authority stationed at airport halls from standard job re-designation procedures. This decision underscores the specialized nature of these workforces and their essential roles in operating crucial equipment and services.
