Baghdad Municipality Launches Groundbreaking Project to Convert Waste into Clean Electricity

Economy Update – Baghdad

The Baghdad Municipality is set to launch the country’s first environmental initiative aimed at converting waste into electrical energy, with the collaboration of a specialized Chinese firm.

According to Uday Al-Jandil, the spokesperson for the municipality, recent efforts have led to the investment authority, in partnership with the Baghdad Municipality, awarding a contract for the waste investment project to a reputable Chinese company. This decision was made after a thorough evaluation process focusing on selecting qualified partners for such projects.

The project is designed to transform three million tons of waste into 100 megawatts of energy for the national grid. Al-Jandil emphasized that this initiative marks a pioneering development in the nation, with the potential for replication across other provinces should it prove successful.

Al-Jandil further indicated that the municipality has successfully acquired two parcels of land intended for the project’s implementation—one located in the Rusafa area, specifically in Nahrawan, and the other in the Karkh region near Abu Ghraib. These sites will facilitate the project’s objectives, which include modernizing waste disposal methods, phasing out outdated landfill practices, enhancing the environmental landscape, mitigating pollution levels, and ensuring ongoing maintenance of waste collection sites.

He added that the municipality intends to capitalize on the significant amounts of waste collected daily, committing to transforming this waste into electrical energy while simultaneously prioritizing environmental preservation.
