Economy News – Baghdad
The Municipality of Baghdad has officially commenced the first phase of the “Sustainable Baghdad Forests” project. This ambitious initiative will transform the land of Al-Rashid camp into the largest urban forest in Iraq, encompassing 12 million square meters and featuring over a million mature trees.
The Secretariat outlined that the executing company has begun clearing debris and amending the soil as part of preparations to create naturalistic features such as green hills, waterfalls, and waterways. This project is positioned as an essential green space and a new tourist attraction for the capital’s residents.
In a statement, it was noted that this project signifies a significant advance in sustainable development. The commitment of the current government has led to a decisive shift in land use from residential to green spaces, focusing on environmental enhancement and tackling the challenges posed by climate change and pollution.
The executive launch of the Baghdad Forests project was initiated by Prime Minister Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani at the end of 2024.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s office, “the project will be realized on the land of Al-Rashid camp.”
On August 18, 2024, the Council of Ministers approved the plan to convert the Al-Rashid camp area, located east of Baghdad, into sustainable and recreational zones designed with high environmental standards, specifically dedicated for entertainment purposes.
Green spaces serve as vital recreational outlets for the citizens of Baghdad, especially as urban development and climate change increasingly impact available green areas due to agricultural lands being converted into residential developments.
The project plans to include 28 diverse forest types, such as a Culture and Arts Forest, a Children’s Forest and Entertainment area, a Ladies’ Forest, a Technology and Innovation Forest, and a Sports and Physical Activity Forest. Additional features will comprise a national pavilion, a global forest village, and a substantial artificial lake spanning 1.5 million square meters, interspersed with waterways. Furthermore, the project will offer cultural and recreational amenities, including a theater, museum, cinema, and sports facilities.
