Baghdad Halts Animal Movement Amid Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak

Economy News – Baghdad

The veterinary department of the Ministry of Agriculture has announced a temporary ban on the movement of animals in and out of areas affected by foot-and-mouth disease for a period of 14 days.

In a statement, the department, under the guidance of Minister of Agriculture Abbas Jabr al-Maliki and with oversight from the technical agent Abdel-Hussein Obaid Charter, has implemented this precautionary measure. The ban will prevent the movement of livestock from medical outposts in Baghdad and other provinces that are experiencing outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease. Moreover, the Director General of the Veterinary Department, Thamer Habib Al-Khafaji, emphasized that all veterinary hospitals and dispensaries in Baghdad and across provinces are mobilizing to investigate potential infections. He stressed the need for intensified monitoring and epidemiological investigations related to the disease, along with proper veterinary health protocols in instances of animal mortality.

The department has outlined critical recommendations to monitor and prevent animal movement from infected regions. Additionally, there is a focus on ensuring the completion of the immune evaluation campaign at central laboratories to ascertain the incidence and virulence of the virus in suspected cases. Samples should be collected from animals exhibiting symptoms in quarantined areas. The ministry has called on agricultural educators to assist veterinary teams in executing the investigation and monitoring operations, thereby safeguarding the health of livestock, which plays an essential role in food production and contributes to national income.
