Economy Update: Apple and Indonesia Reach Key Agreement
Indonesia’s Minister of Industry, Agos Gumiog Cartacasmita, has announced that Apple is poised to sell its iPhone 16 models in Indonesia following successful negotiations that resulted in a commitment from Apple to establish a manufacturing facility and a research and development center in the country.
This agreement marks a significant turning point after previous challenges, including Indonesia’s prohibition on the sale of the iPhone 16 over compliance issues related to locally sourced components. The recent discussions were described by Minister Cartacasmita as “complicated” and have now positioned Apple to obtain the necessary local content certification for its devices.
“We are striving to honor the principle of fairness… aiming to maximize the value added to our local industry,” Agos stated during a press briefing, emphasizing the commitment to Indonesian economic interests.
Industry analysts have expressed concerns that local content regulations could potentially undermine investor confidence and create apprehensions regarding commercial protectionism.
Under the terms of the agreement valued at over $300 million, Apple is set to invest in a software research and development center near Jakarta, alongside the construction of facilities for producing components for various products, including AirPods, as noted by the Minister.
Despite its absence in Indonesian manufacturing to date, Apple has cultivated a presence in the nation since 2018 by establishing local academies for developers within the market of approximately 280 million consumers.
Firms typically meet local component requirements in Indonesia by engaging in local partnerships or sourcing parts domestically. However, the Minister did not provide a timeline for when Apple will receive approval to launch the iPhone 16 in Indonesia.
Additionally, Apple faced challenges in the Indonesian market, having been excluded from the list of the top five smartphone brands in the third quarter of the previous year, according to market research data.
