Iraq Plans 36 New Dams: Minister Announces Sinjar Project for 2025

Economy News – Baghdad

The Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Dhiab, announced a strategic proposal for the establishment of 36 new dams, including plans for three specific dams in the Sinjar region to be constructed this year, 2025.

In a recent statement, Dhiab highlighted that the Ministry is focused on developing several dams within the Sinjar area, suggesting the potential construction of three to four dams. He emphasized that the realization of this initiative depends on securing the necessary financial allocations. The Ministry plans to align this project with its annual objectives and within the constraints of the 2025 budget, with hopes of commencing construction once the budget is ratified.

Dhiab went on to explain that the proposed construction of 36 new dams, alongside over 20 existing dams, aims to improve groundwater replenishment. He noted that pastoral communities, particularly those in the arid western and southern Badia regions, will benefit from these developments.

The Minister reiterated that while the goal is to ultimately establish all 36 dams, executing the entire project at once poses challenges. The current strategy involves initiating the construction of three dams in the Sinjar region this year, with a commitment to complete the project incrementally over time.
