Economic Update – Baghdad
On Thursday, Minister of Labor Ahmed Al-Asadi reaffirmed the government’s dedication to fostering a supportive environment for orphans, announcing assistance for over 137,000 orphaned children.
During the “Orphans Iftar Campaign” organized by the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, Al-Asadi stated, “The state is committed to the care of orphans and ensuring a brighter future for them.” He emphasized that “the Ministry of Labor, through the Social Protection Authority, has broadened the social protection framework over the past two years to include a greater number of eligible children.”
Al-Asadi further elaborated that “the ministry has provided assistance to more than 137,000 orphans belonging to widows and needy families through social benefits. In addition, grants have been awarded to over 2.2 million children to facilitate their continued education, alongside specialized support programs for 11,000 children with diabetes.”
Al-Asadi highlighted, “The Ministry is working towards providing health insurance for more than 177,000 children in Baghdad and has established 42 child protection units across various governorates to offer necessary support and consultations to vulnerable children. Furthermore, the ‘Cash Plus’ program has been launched in Al-Muthanna Governorate, impacting over 7,000 children through cash subsidies linked to adherence to the national vaccination schedule.” He reiterated the ministry’s commitment to incorporating all children into housing programs for social protection and to continuously support new cases.
In addition, he noted the establishment of more than 30 schools for orphans, in collaboration with the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Education, benefitting over 3,000 students. He emphasized that “these initiatives represent only a segment of our commitment to supporting orphans and those in need.”
Al-Asadi concluded with a call to action, stating, “We will continue to work diligently to ensure that every child is afforded their right to a dignified life, education, health, and protection. I urge everyone—both institutions and individuals—to lend their support to these children; the responsibility lies with all of us.”
