Economy Updates – Baghdad
The national team for renewable energy projects and energy efficiency has announced the initiation of a substantial solar energy initiative aimed at implementing solar systems across 5,000 government buildings, with 543 of these buildings already operating under solar energy provisions.
The first phase of this initiative will target 543 structures, primarily focusing on educational institutions, with 290 schools involved, as well as 24 health centers located in Baghdad and other governorates. A dedicated committee will oversee further projects, ultimately transitioning thousands of government facilities into energy-efficient entities through the installation of solar energy systems.
According to Qasim, the committee aims to integrate solar energy systems into over 5,000 government buildings. This initiative aims not only to enhance energy efficiency but also to introduce solar water heating systems to alleviate energy loads. He emphasized that, under the leadership of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, Iraq is committed to pioneering innovative projects that utilize smart technologies alongside solar energy, including the implementation of smart electronic meters to manage energy loads effectively.
Qasim further elaborated, stating, “This initiative will also address load management issues, which have historically plagued the sector, as well as the inadequate electricity collection rates. This has resulted in demand consistently outstripping supply. By adopting smart technology and solar energy solutions, we aim to curb demand and enhance energy control mechanisms.”
