Call for Action on Oil Smuggling: Government Urged to Leverage Regional Relations
On Tuesday, Muhammad Al-Zayhoud, head of the Ajyal Bloc, urged the government to intensify its efforts, utilizing its beneficial relationships with neighboring countries, to combat the ongoing issue of oil smuggling in the region. During a press briefing, Al-Zayhoud emphasized that the persistent smuggling of oil poses a significant challenge for the Iraqi government, particularly in relation to its obligations to the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). Moreover, he pointed out that this illicit activity adversely impacts the Iraqi economy and contributes to an oversupply in the global market, leading to price reductions.
Experts in the oil sector support the assertion that decisive measures are essential to address the smuggling problem. The implications of this issue not only affect national economic stability but also Iraq’s standing among international oil-producing entities.
